The Cittaslow movement

Cittaslow is a movement created in Italy in 1999. Maintaining the diversity and portraying the characteristics of every municipality became the starting point and main goal of the movement, in order to ameliorating the quality of life of the locals, and create an identity of each community and place. In 2003, Sokndal municipality was the first municipality outside of Italy to become a member of the Cittaslow movement. In order to become a member, the municipality had to comply with 52 criteria concerning environmental politics, infrastructure, property planning, valuation of local produce, hospitality and awareness. In a Cittaslow municipality, you have no tourists – only guests!
