Marking?Trips marked with the national standard are marked in green (easy), blue (medium), red (demanding) and black (expert). DNT (The Norwegian Trekking Association) marked routes are marked with red T's, painted on cairns and stones. Local associations and sports clubs may have marked hiking trails in other ways. There are many different varieties. Ask at the tourist information office if you are unsure of the markings in the area you are visiting.

General facilities

  • Good to know - Huge parts of the Jæren beaches are protected landscape areas, and you should be aware of certain restrictions. It is forbidden to use motorised vehicles in nature. Do not walk on cropland during growing season. Respect people’s privacy. Do not set up a tent any nearer than 150 metres from a house or a cottage. You need permission from land owner if you camp for longer than 2 nights. Do not light a fire in nature between 15 April to 15 September. Respect the fact that other might use the area as their livelihood. If you bring along a dog in nature, you are obliged to keep it on a leash where livestock are grazing. Remember the general laws on keeping dogs on a leash. For hunting and fishing, special rules apply that you need to be aware of.
  • Practical information - Clothing: Preferably wool closest to body, then fleece and then windproof jacket. Bring rainproof clothing, hat, gloves (winter) and spare change. It is important to have sturdy footwear - use hiking/mountain boots. Pack enough food and drink adapted to length of your hike. First aid kit. Bring your phone, but remember that you might not have reception at all times.
  • Warning - Please be aware of possible strong underwater currents at the beaches of Jæren for those of you who fancy a swim (summer) or surfing. The currents could potentially drag you under and further out at sea. Also, be prepared for all types of weather, even in summer. This is why you must bring clothing and equipment apt for sunny and nice weather, but also account for snow (winter), rain and weather wind. The weather can change rapidly. If you hike in winter, please bring extra safety equipment, i.e. a headlight. See www.yr.no for weather forecast.
